TITLE Appointment of 31 new law clerks with legal experience in 2025 (Feb. 28, 2025)

On March 1, 2024, Chief Justice Jo appointed 24 law clerks with legal experience. The appointment ceremony is scheduled to take place at various High Courts and District Courts on March 4, 2025.

The selection of law clerks with practical legal experience in diverse fields aims to enhance the capacity of courts to address increasingly complex legal disputes. By providing support for adjudication, this initiative seeks to ensure thorough and timely resolutions, ultimately safeguarding the public's right to a fair trial. This year's appointment marks the third round of selections since the inaugural appointment in 2022.

Notably, similar to the second oral examination stage, external committee members—professors from law schools—participated in the third personality interview stage. This stage evaluates the candidates' professional responsibilities, ethical standards, and motivation for applying for a law clerkship, promoting fairness and transparency in the selection process.

In this selection process, a total of 31 law clerks were selected, a figure similar to last year. This decision was made after a comprehensive review of each stage's evaluation results, the demand for law clerks across different high court jurisdictions, and the established quota for law clerks.

- Seoul High Court jurisdiction: 20 law clerks

- Daejeon High Court jurisdiction: 2 law clerks

- Daegu High Court jurisdiction: 2 law clerks

- Busan High Court jurisdiction: 2 law clerks

- Gwangju High Court jurisdiction: 2 law clerks

- Suwon High Court jurisdiction: 3 law clerks

Of the 31 selected law clerks,7 are currently serving in the military as judge advocates. These clerks will be officially appointed on August 1, 2025. This year's appointees, who have legal experience, are expected to make significant contributions to ensuring individuals' right to a fair trial. They will support judges in their adjudication processes, drawing on their diverse experiences from law firms, state agencies, and public institutions.
