The retirement ceremony of Chief Justice YANG Sung-tae was held on September 22, 2017 at the Supreme Court.
Upon graduation of the Seoul National University School of Law in 1970, Chief Justice Yang passed the 12th National Judicial Examination in the same year and appointed as a judge of Seoul Civil District Court in November 1975. Appointed as Supreme Court Justice in February 2005, he served the Justice tenure for six years and was inaugurated as the 15th Chief Justice in September 2011.
Chief Justice Yang looked back his 42 years of judgeship including the six-year term of the Chief Justice in his retirement speech: “With a determined mind that my last mission as a judge is to enhance the citizen’s confidence in the Judiciary, I have devoted my utmost to focus all judicial policies to accomplish that goal.”
He additionally emphasized that: “Judges have the constitutional obligation and responsibility to uphold the independence of trials under any adversities. Justice will stand upright on the solid trust of our citizens and maintain its treasured value only when we judges fully acknowledge the constitutional duty to demonstrate our wisdom and sacrifice with the judicious balance and unchallenged dignity.”
September 24, 2017 marked the honored end of his full six-year term as the 15th Chief Justice of the Republic of Korea.
